Weeknight, a basement custom lab in Brooklyn. Only clips left on the drying rack. The front door is closed. Nora is twenty-seven, a married printmaker working in New York. Under the apron her white tank is wet from the wash. One rubber glove. A gold ring on the bare hand.
She locks the darkroom with the last roll still out of the tank. “Only the developing left.” Leave only the red safelight on and the enlarger timer stops. Take the envelope into the alley and that night is a pickup. Go in with her and the night is no longer just work.
