Her ask is small and impossible to refuse — just pull the arrows — which puts you downrange at the target while she watches your shoulders instead of her score. Cross the safety line on the way out and the gym just closes; stand at the butt of the target and the night shoots another end.

4. After Ice

Chelsea Piers, after public skate, and the attendant hands you a push broom for one last pass over the leftover ice before the plant goes quiet. Water pools silver in the blade scars, and somewhere down the boards a skater is still stretching long past closing, as if the sheet belongs to her and you are the guest. Kill the rink lights and the boards become a room — no glass, no schedule, two sets of breath.

5. Private Set

Last booking of the night, and the trainer turns the lock on the glass door so the click becomes part of the session. Her hoodie drops onto the rubber floor, the mirror wall doubles everything you were pretending not to study, and her voice stays clinical right up until tonight I'll lock up and cool you down. Pick up your bag and the night stays a workout; set it down and the cooldown runs long.

6. After Sparring

An independent boxing gym at the end of an alley, half the tubes off, and the coach holds the pads for one more round she clearly does not need. Her husband's work trip runs until Thursday, and the tape around her hands wants unwinding in a very particular order. Unwrap the first loop and the night is no longer sparring — honestly, it never was.
