7 Visual Novels Like Shared Dock
Double bookings are supposed to be somebody else's problem — and then the gravel road bends through the pines and there's an SUV with Minnesota plates parked in front of your cabin. Shared Dock is built on that error: one lake cabin in northern Wisconsin, late summer, sold twice for the same Friday-to-Sunday. My confirmation says I have arrived home. The woman behind the screened porch disagrees, politely.
Nora got here first, up from Minneapolis. The mosquito candles are already lit on the porch. Wet footprints cross the boards toward the dock, one beer can stands open on the rail, and when the door opens she's wearing an oversized linen shirt with a swimsuit strap underneath, barefoot on the threshold, shoulders newly burned from an afternoon I wasn't part of.
"There's only one room."
A loft with one ladder, a dock with room for two, an outdoor shower with a view of nothing but stars. The cabin keeps score too.
Capsule After the check-in cutoff, Capsule patrols a women-only capsule floor with Jeong-eun, night duty personified and a roll-screen magnet she pockets instead of using. Just the roll screen, she says — the screens close, the floor goes quiet, and the shared shower passage becomes the only way out. The patrol ends whenever she decides it does.
Shared Lease My name isn't the one on the lease, and in Shared Lease that's the smallest irregularity on file. The leaseholder is a married woman, her husband's room sits empty every Friday, and two glasses somehow end up in the shared kitchen anyway. Shut your own door and it's rent. Leave it open and the paperwork starts reading differently.
Vacant Tour A vacant two-bedroom on the Upper West Side, a landlord whose husband is elsewhere, and a spare key she sets on the kitchen island like an opening bid — Vacant Tour stages its whole seduction as real estate. The tenant arrives tomorrow; tonight the apartment belongs to whoever stays for the full tour. The elevator is thirty seconds away and getting farther all the time.
Lookout Fire towers strip a night down to pure watchfulness, and Lookout spends the last dry-season watch there. Chaewon keeps the Osborne Firefinder in her lap, picking ridgelines out of the dark and declining to stand down; as long as it isn't smoke, she says, which leaves a remarkable amount unsaid. The way down is one ladder and a decision neither of you is ready to make.
Weekend Key Weekend Key hands a guest wing to a guest and the weekend to chance. His cousin leaves for a trip; Harin, who still lives in off the kitchen, appears on night two to ask whether he's eaten. Finish the leftovers, close the door, and it's just an empty house being kind. By the second night of that arithmetic, the weekend has stopped being a favor.
The Beacon Flood tide, an unmanned lighthouse in the East Sea, a shift change that The Beacon makes you both work for. Haeum keeps one hand flat on the mercury-bath cover and insists she'll put the fire in herself, and the spiral stair offers no alternate route. Take the supply-boat rope in hand and it's only a shift change; miss the boat, and you're on her watch now.
Every cabin, tower and lease above runs on the same shortage: one room's worth of night and two people with cancelled alternatives. The live-in shelf will room you with more of them, and the story of the capsule floor after cutoff is the natural next check-in.
